Why did you decide to start a career in nails?
After university I wanted to be a fashion buyer, I worked in the industry for a year and I hated it. It wasn’t me at all nor was it all I had hoped! I’d been having my nails done with Bio in a local salon for 4 years at that point and I absolutely loved not just the product but the lovely environment I had them done in. So with my arty back ground I thought I’d give it a go!
What made you choose Bio Sculpture?
It was the product I’d been having for so many years and in between I did a summer in Ibiza where no one offered Bio. So I had to try other gel products and they just didn’t even compare! So when I got home I knew that Bio Sculpture was the product to use and trust for my new business venture.
Why does a career as a manicurist suit you more than your previous career?
I have so much more freedom with what I do with my time. I get to be head of my decisions and fully immerse myself in my creativity.

What is your favourite Bio Sculpture colour?
Ok I literally can’t answer this! I have too many!! I can name a few off the top of my head... No.75 Fruity Tooty, No.118 High Tea Tulip, No.96 Summer Holiday, No.159 Grace, No.155 Jackie, and No.215 More Is Definitely More.

What are your top three tips for someone wanting to make a career change and become a manicurist?
- Make sure you enjoy the finer details and learn all about how to take nice pictures of your work using good lighting (don’t use the flash!).
- Get social media savvy and keep on top of posting all your work, instagram is awesome so don’t ignore it. Aim for 20 (at least) hashtags and unload separately to your business Facebook page. Facebook spams images with lots of hashtags so no one will see it on the newsfeed. Instead with Facebook use descriptions and maybe through a question in there. For example “Hands up who loves this colour?”
- If you’re struggling with clients one week, pop up a collection of images of nail designs (nail art and colours etc) that you’d like to try out and ask the question “Who will let me do these on their nails?!”. It seriously worked a treat for me!
How many hours a week do you work?
Too many! As I have added other strings to my bow (Semi-Permanent Make-up etc) I don’t just do the nails anymore. But generally I work 10am - 7.30pm, no breaks, Monday - Friday.
How do you find your clients?
A lot now is through word of mouth which is lovely. But I’d say mostly on social media like Instagram and Facebook.
